The Franconian city of Bayreuth in Bavaria is a magnet for opera fans. The German composer Richard Wagner (1813-83) lived there from 1872, and since 1876 the Richard Wagner Festival has been staged annually in the Festspielhaus. The Bayreuth festival theatre was built between 1872 and 1876 with funding by the Bavarian King Ludwig II, who was one of Wagner's greatest admirers
